Briksdal
Kleiva waterfall & Briksdal glacier

STARTPOINT: MELKEVOLL BRETUN
We never get tired of this amazing family friendly walk through Briksdal. It is not just the glacier and the turquoise water in the end who makes this one of Norways most beautiful nature destinations. You walk in a dreamlike landscape with trees, rivers, waterfalls and stones around you everywhere.
You walk on a nice road all the way, from you pass the restaurant in Briksdal. There is also a possibility for transport with open cars up to the glacier. The trip goes through a beautiful landscape where the sight of waterfalls and glaciers may take your breath away. The road is easy to walk because farmers in Oldedalen created roads and bridges for easy access here, more than 120 years ago. Oldeskaret
(Ca. 1100 m.a.s.l . Total 4-5 hours )
STARTPOINT: MELKEVOLL BRETUN
The startingpoint for this beautiful hike is at Melkevoll Bretun. This hike is for those who like to walk in mountains and with some steep areas.
This trip has been called “Norway´s most beautiful uphill walk” !
The starting point for this trip is next to Melkevoll Bretun´s reception building. You continue over the bridge towards the big cabins, and continue into the woods, from here you can follow the marked path. After approx. 30 minutes walk you come to a quite steep area. The path is good and created by professional sherpas from Nepal who has made steps of stone in the most challenging areas. Just follow the path, and after a while you´ll come to spectacular views towards Briksdal glacier, as well as a crack in the mountain called “Gløvre”. After this you will approach what is called “Oldeskaret”. You come to two small waters and a stone cottage “Jarbu”.
From here it is possible to walk all the way over the mountain to Høyset and Stardalen. If you do this you need to have pick up on the other side.
We recommend to walk up and return back to Melkevoll Bretun for a day trip.
If you continue to Stardalen, you will pass the second water “Storevatnet”, Haugabreen, and approach Haugastølen. (5-6 hours walk). From here you need pick up, and the drive back is through Stardalen, Byrkjelo, Innvik, Olden and to Oldedalen. (1,5 hour drive).
Mt. Kattanakken
130- 1450 m.a.s.l. / Total 5-8 hours
Follow the way to the Briksdal's glacier and turn to the right before the second bridge across the river. It is a sign post here with information about Kattanakken. First, its easy terrain to walk, follow the markings; until you reach Sauskårholten after approx two hours walk. Here is a great view over Oldedalen valley. People without much experiences in hiking or those who have no head for heights, are advised to reverse at this point, before the steeper more exposed part of the trip starts. Walking further will lead to a high ridge that is exposed. Ask us for tips for this trip in the reception, or seek out information in hiking guides. Mt. Kattanakken is a trip for people with experience in mountain hiking, and you will be highly rewarded with fantastic views of the valley and of the glacier plateau when you reach the summit.
Brenndal glacier
BRENNDAL GLACIER
10 minutes walk, 2 minutes drive from Melkevoll Bretun
(85-300 M.A.S.L, Total 3-4 HOURS)
1.5 km back down the main road from Melkevoll Bretun you find Aabrekk farm on the right hand side. Here you can find a small parking area and the starting point for the trip to «Brenndalen» and Brenndal glacier.
The first part of the hike leads through a forest. The path first starts uphill, then it flattens. Brenndalen is a so-called hanging side valley, the mountain sides are steep. In the valley, you gain a great impression of the glacier, rivers, mountains and waterfalls. It offers a simple hike through a silent, idyllic region, adequate for young and old.
Flatsteinbu
(30-1400 m.a.s.l., total 5-6 hours)
The tour starts at the parking lot of Kvame. It takes about an hour to Kvamsseter, from where you can start ascending up to the leading edge of the glacier, passing Kvamsdalen. There you arrive at the self-service cottage called Flatsteinbu.
For organized trips: With the aid of a glacier guide, you easily reach the glacier's plateau, which is comparatively close to the highest glacier elevation. From there you get to the Jostedalen.
At Yrineset and Yri outdoor, a few minutes by car from Melkevoll Bretun - at Olden lake, you can rent kayak or canoe. During the summer season they also have pop-up café where you can enjoy the beautiful area and amazing views near the water.
GYTRI WATERFALL
Startpoint: Olden camping and Gryta camping - 10 minutes drive from Melkevoll Bretun towards Olden.
A 1-2 hour walk up to a beautiful waterfall an with views over Olden lake.

This trip is a bit steep and with various qualities on the path, - but for experienced mountain hikers it is worth it with amazing views on the top.

In Loen and Lodalen you can find some wonderful attractions and mountain hikes. Loen is 25 minutes drive from Melkevoll Bretun, and Lodalen 35 minutes drive away.
LOEN SKYLIFT
Next to the hotel Alexandra in Loen you can take the cable car Loen Skylift to Hoven resturant. Here you have nice views over Nordfjord, paths and walks in the mountains, as well as Via Ferrata.
MT. SKÅLA
With start close to Tjugen camping this is one of the classics for mountain hikes in the area. Recommeded for experienced mountaineers!
